The Bonn University lidar at the Esrange : technical description and capabilities for atmospheric research
نویسنده
چکیده
The Bonn University operates a Rayleigh/Mie/Raman backscatter lidar at the Esrange near the Swedish city of Kiruna, north of the Arctic circle. The lidar system covers the atmosphere from about 4 km to 100 km altitude and it is capable of measuring aerosols in the tropo-, strato-, and mesosphere, as well as of determining temperature profiles in the aerosol-free part of the atmosphere (i.e. above 30-km altitude). Density tuned fixed-spacer etalons provide daylight capability and thus increased sensitivity to noctilucent clouds during polar summer. Polarisation measurements allow liquid and solid phase discrimination for aerosol and cloud particles in the tropoand stratosphere. The derived temperature profiles can be used for the detection and analysis of atmospheric gravity waves. Although several lidar experiments are situated in polar latitudes, a comprehensive instrument which covers the troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere, is daylight capable, and observes temperature profiles, as well as aerosols, is exceptional. In this article a technical description, in particular, of the optical configuration of this experiment is given, as well as an overview of achievable geophysical parameters. The potential for geophysical analyses is shown.

Simultaneous lidar observations of temperatures and waves in the polar middle atmosphere on the east and west side of the Scandinavian mountains: a case study on 19/20 January 2003
Atmospheric gravity waves have been the subject of intense research for several decades because of their extensive effects on the atmospheric circulation and the temperature structure. The U. Bonn lidar at the Esrange and the ALOMAR RMR lidar at the Andøya Rocket Range are located in northern Scandinavia 250 km apart on the east and west side of the Scandinavian mountain ridge. During January a...

The atmosphere background wind field controls the propagation of gravity waves from the troposphere through the stratosphere into the mesosphere. During January 2003 the MaCWAVE campaign took place at Esrange, with the purpose of observing vertically ascending waves induced by orography. Temperature data from the U. Bonn lidar at Esrange (68 N/21 E) and the ALOMAR RMR lidar (69 N/16 E), wind da...

The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University operates the Esrange Rayleigh/Raman lidar at Esrange (68 N, 21 E) near the Swedish city of Kiruna. This paper describes the design and first measurements of the new pure rotational-Raman channel of the Esrange lidar. The Esrange lidar uses a pulsed Nd:YAG solid-state laser operating at 532 nm as light source with a repetition rate of 20 Hz a...
متن کاملEarly Validation of Vertical Profiles from the Envisat Atmospheric Instruments Gomos and Mipas with the University of Bonn Lidar at the Esrange in July and August 2002
The vertical structure of the terrestrial atmosphere is governed by hydrostatic equilibrium, which relates altitude, temperature, and pressure (or density). The mixing ratios derived for the chemically important trace gases depend on a precise knowledge of this basic atmospheric structure. The Bonn University backscatter lidar on the Esrange (68N, 21E) near Kiruna, Sweden, was operated from mid...
